Blended Family Wedding Ideas

A wedding ceremony with her kids, his kids, and you two is a beautiful statement of unity for a blended family.  Here are some easy ideas to make it special:

  1. Flower Ritual:  Two vases of different kinds of flowers representing each parent. One empty vase in the center.  During the ceremony each of the family members takes a flower from their parent's vase and places it into the center vase.  The new bouquet represents the new blended family.
  2. Sand Ritual: Using the sand ceremony tradition, each family member has a different color sand.  All of the family members pour sand into the vessel creating a mosaic of colored sand representing the new family.
  3. Fountain of Love:  Each family member chooses a smooth rounded rock.  Upon this rock, they write their name and perhaps a meaningful word.  During the ceremony, the rocks are placed in a special bowl to represent each members unique difference and yet unity as a family.
  4.  Family Prayer:  At the end of the ceremony, when it is time for a blessing, all family members place their hands one upon another for a family blessing.
  5. Vow to the family:  Each parent, after their vows to each other, gives a vow of commitment to the children of the now blended family.
  6. Gratitude for support:  When children are grown yet supportive of your new marriage, you may wish to give a word of thanksgiving and blessing to your grown children during the ceremony.
  7. Conflicting feeling:  When the children of the couple are conflicted about their parents getting married, ask each child if they wish to be involved and honor their feelings.
  8. Call me by name:  It is important to each of us to be recognized by our name, especially younger children or teenagers (though they may not acknowledge it).  Ask the wedding officiant to include a prayer similar to this, "Lord God, as this new family goes forth together, touch the lives of ______, _______, _______, and _______ (children's names), that each one may blossom in this family into the unique and special person you have created them to be."

Fun facts about "brides and weddings"

"Bridal" comes from Middle English and refers to the wedding feast with its copious amount of "bridale" - "bride ale."  The word "wed" or "wedde," an older term, also derives from Middle English and meant "pledge."  A man pledged goods in exchange for the bride.  Bride prices, dowries, a father "giving away" his daughter, transferring his power over her to another man, all remind us that marriage across societies and time periods was primarily a financial transaction and the practice of marrying for love is not very old."

"Queen Victoria's 1840 wedding is generally cited as the start of the widespread adoption of white, as brides copied her satin gown in Europe and North America.  In China, India, Vietnam and some other Asian countries red garments are traditionally worn, although the bride often changes into a white Western dress for the reception."

These comments were from a enjoyable soft murder mystery by Katherine Hall Page featuring a grand wedding on the New York Gold Coast.  The author's notes included some fascinating facts about wedding traditions.

I Take Thee

I ______ take thee _______,
To be my partner in marriage and in life.
To love you and honor you
To give thanks for you and
To serve you
With my wit
My strength
My heart.
To stand by you always
Even if sickness should threaten
And despite the turmoil around us
To create with you a living example
Of the beauty of a relationship
Between a man and a woman.

_____, my beloved,
I choose now to take this journey with you
Wherever it leads
Whatever the outcome
No matter what may befall us
As God is my witness
Through all the days of our lives.

I Give You My Love

I give you my love
I give you my heart
I give you my hope
I give you with joy
     from the coffers of my precious time the rest of the days of my life;
To delight in your body
To nourish your mind
To be at home with your spirit
     the way a star is at home in the sky;
To celebrate you with joy
     the way the sun emblazons the seas with its light;
To console you in sorrow
To wrap my heart around yours like a blanket
Until we both shall grow old and the sight falls from our eyes
 and our being
      falls from life to light;
I choose to go with you always
From this day until the end of our days
As your adoring soul mate.

Should I get married?

Question: Sometimes I think I want to get married, but lots of marriages end in divorce.  Why should I put myself through that pain?

Answer:  It is understandably difficult to imagine that your marriage will last when so many others have failed.  No one wants to be hurt.  But ask yourself this: would it hurt if your lover left you or was unfaithful to you?  Of course it would.  The truth is that all relationships involve some degree of risk.  You must be willing to take a risk in order to gain the love that your heart desires.

Getting married, however, isn't as big of a risk as is living together.  Choosing to live together won't prevent the pain you wish to avoid.  In fact, living together may be more likely to cause your relationship to fail.

Beyond the practical benefits of marriage, there is the mystery of God's plan for relationships.  Sex and marriage are his ideas!  Because God loves you so much, he wants the absolute best for you.  That's why he gave instructions to marry and to save sexual intimacy for marriage.  He knew that the best way for your deepest needs to be met was in the security of marriage.  When you obey the instructions he has given, he promises to bless you.  Marriage is simply the right thing to do when you love someone.

God wants you to find fulfillment in marriage, but on one person can meet all your needs. You need a relationship with God.  Even in the most healthy marriage, you will have a place in your heart that will feel unsettled or unsatisfied.  This spot has been described as a God-shaped void that only God can fill.  God's plan for you can only be known as you get to know him.

 If you want to understand more how your marriage is part of God's process to grow the two of your into a lasting, loving oneness, Chaplain Gene and Chaplain Anne would love to share our story with you. Free premarital counseling sessions are available.
